TECHNICAL EDITING AND ORIGINAL KNITTING PATTERNS

Welcome!

Faye Perriam-Reed is a freelance knitting technical editor, grader and knitwear designer based in Bristol, UK. She has many years of experience in the industry and has been tech editing professionally since 2013. Faye now works with clients all over the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, providing grading support and ensuring their knitting patterns are accurate, concise and accessible.

Faye’s own patterns are thoughtfully written for a wide range of sizes and feature different techniques for intermediate to advanced knitters. Many of her designs have been featured in The Knitter and Knitting Magazine and her pattern collection includes socks, hats, shawls, mittens and sleeveless tops. Faye specialises in elegant knitting patterns and accessory designs that that can often be achieved using a single skein of yarn. She loves working lace, twisted cables and textures into her work.

Beyond technical editing and pattern writing, Faye provides tailored consultations for other designers eager to enhance their patterns or delve into innovative techniques.

I have worked with Faye for more than 10 years. As a technical editor she will always go the extra mile to ensure the patterns she works on are accurate, concise, and easy to understand.

Faye has an extensive knowledge of garment construction, stitch pattern mechanics, and both traditional and innovative knitting techniques. Her own designs have an elegant simplicity to them that comes from a deep understanding of what knitters enjoy making most, eschewing unnecessary fussiness wherever possible.

About Me

Knitwear designer and knitting technical editor Faye Perriam-Reed, sporting short blond hair, wears her light blue Sennen Cove Lace Tee with a lace panel up the front. She stands smiling in front of a wooden door.

Hi, I’m Faye! I initially learned to knit as a child and then picked it up properly in my early twenties. I would often be found alone in my room knitting different swatches, rather than going out socialising with my housemates. I went on to study dressmaking and pattern cutting, so I had an idea of how garments were constructed. Before long I was modifying designs and began publishing my own patterns in 2010, whilst working full time as a graphic designer.

I was offered the position of Technical Editor for The Knitter and Simply Knitting magazines in 2013 and was lucky enough to receive on-the-job training to further improve my skills in this field. I was soon checking up to 50 patterns per month across the two magazines and my pattern design work went on the back-burner for a while.

After 8 years, a pandemic and pregnant with my second child, I started my own business as a freelance technical editor and grader, so I could expand the range of designers, publications and companies I worked with, get my design mojo back and find a better work/life balance.

Being a technical editor and designer really makes my brain tick. I love finding solutions to problems and I’m excited to spend my working life surrounded by yarn, in conversation with inspiring people, constantly improving my technical skills and learning new tricks, which inspire my own creations.
